What is Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is the exploitation of people through force, fraud, or coercion for labor or sex, and it happens in communities everywhere, including Michigan.

Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is when people profit from the control and exploitation of others. Human trafficking includes:

  • ACTION
    The action which may be the recruiting, harboring, transporting, providing, patronizing, soliciting, advertising or obtaining of an individual.
  • MEANS
    Through means of force, fraud or coercion. Force may involve physical or sexual abuse, confinement, sleep or food deprivation, or the use of substances.
  • PURPOSE
    For a specific purpose, either of compelled labor, services or commercial sex act(s).
  • Fraud includes false promises of work or living conditions, withholding promised wages, or contract fraud. Coercion involves threats of harm to self or others, debt bondage, psychological manipulation, or document confiscation.
  • For individuals under the age of 18 who are exploited through commercial sex, proof of force, fraud, or coercion is not required.

TRAFFICKING IN MICHIGAN

In late 2014, the Michigan legislature passed into law the Human Trafficking Commission Act which created the Michigan Human Trafficking Commission within the Department of Attorney General. In early 2015, the Governor made initial appointments of the 14 members and in early 2015 the Commission began their work.

The Michigan Anti-Trafficking Project works with the Michigan Human Trafficking Commission, other governmental task forces, service providers and anti-trafficking advocates in order to improve our collective response to human trafficking in our state.
